The Business Requirement
Javelin is a successful and rapidly-growing consultancy providing the highest quality guidance to its clients. Operating across a complex retail landscape the Company requires to recruit and retain a multi-disciplinary workforce. In addition to the normal challenges of ensuring that employees feel happy and valued, Javelin, as a centre of excellence in their sphere of consultancy operations, required also to combat the continual and pervasive threat of their staff being poached by rival organisations.
Until 2010 staff attitudes and feedback had been gathered by Management using a variety of formal and informal methods. However, the company had grown to a size where it was necessary to implement a more comprehensive approach to gathering staff views and it was decided that the best solution was to use an on-line staff survey provided by an external agency. The use of an external agency provided anonymity and confidentiality for respondents and gave staff the freedom to express their views and feelings in a non-attributable way.
After researching the market Javelin selected Sigmer Technologies as their preferred survey supplier; the selection being based on Sigmer's skills, experience and survey technology which provided a high-quality service at a competitive cost.
The Sigmer Solution
This first 'structured' staff survey would provide a benchmark of staff feelings and would allow the monitoring of changes in staff attitudes over time. The survey was based on one of Sigmer's templates "on-line staff attitude surveys" which was bespoked to suit the particular requirements of Javelin. The use of a template survey for the foundation of the questionnaire allowed a very rapid response with standard groups of questions already prepared covering a number of areas. The survey was treated as anonymous and staff were encouraged to be open and honest in their responses.
Following testing and QA the survey was launched to staff within the context of an internal communications activity conducted by the CEO. Each member of staff received a personal e-mail inviting them to the on-line survey.
Sigmer provided the Javelin Project Team with an on-line survey report portal which allowed them, at any time during and after the survey, to view a dynamically-created report of responses. The on-line survey report showed, in real-time, the number of responses by department. It allowed the project team to alert specific directors and managers to any shortfall of responses from their department or business unit and to the need for the encouragement of staff in those areas.
The report portal also provided Javelin with a graphical and statistical report of the responses to each question.
The Result
The survey has been a considerable success for Javelin and it has given much useful feedback to Management. Detailed analysis of the survey results and data has provided useful input to on-going strategies for HR and Commercial Development.
